1. General information

The subject is oriented to respond to the following approaches and objectives:

• Recognize the role and importance of Legal Dentistry and Bioethics in its social and scientific dimension.
• Theoretical understanding and practical application of the legal and social context as well as the ethical and legal bases for the professional practice of dentistry.
• To train students to adapt their actions to a changing legal framework and to a rapidly evolving scientific scenario that creates new ethical challenges in the practice of health professions.
• To foster their ability to analyse and critique ethical dilemmas and medico-legal issues that may be of interest for their personal and professional development.

These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations ( 2030 Agenda (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/).

2. Learning results

• Know the legislative norms that affect the practice of dentistry including patient's rights.
• Know the ethical and deontological rules that regulate the practice of the profession.
• Be familiar with the organization of health care in Spain, especially with oral health care.
• Know the professional structures (Professional Corporations and Scientific Societies) and know their organization, competences and functions.
• Know how to face an ethical dilemma (professional or extra-professional) in an orderly and reasonable manner.
• Know how to prepare all types of dental-legal documents (in particular, informed consent documents) and know their possible legal implications.
• Know the behaviour to follow in the event of a legal claim by a patient.
• Know the possible clinical risks that a patient may suffer and be competent to prevent them.
• Know the toxicological risks generated by the dental activity for professionals, auxiliary personnel, patients and the environment and be competent to avoid them.
• Know the basic fundamentals of Forensic Dentistry and the Valuation of Oral Damage.

  The student, in order to pass this subject, must demonstrate the following results...

  • Be able to identify and understand the ethical-deontological, legislative and administrative precepts that regulate the dental profession
  • Be able to apply to concrete situations the ethical principles and legislative precepts that regulate the professional practice of dentistry and be competent to practice them.
  • Know the rights and duties of patients, with special attention to the right to information and the right to confidentiality and the obligatory respect for the principle of autonomy.
  • Understand the role of the dentist within the health professions and how they should act professionally, from the legal and ethical point of view with other health professionals and other members of the dental team.
  • Identify under what circumstances can the dentist collaborate with the Administration of Justice.
  • Know and know how to prepare the most frequently used medical-legal documents in Dentistry.

  Knowledge of the current legal and administrative framework, of the deontological and bioethical principles to exercise the functions and responsibilities of the dental professional, using the socio-health and economic resources within the community, recognizing and responding to ethical or moral dilemmas and issues in daily practice.

4. Academic activities

The subject Legal Dentistry and Bioethics is a 6 ECTS subject, which has been organized as follows:

Participatory lectures 1.44 ECTS. 36 hours.

Practical classes: 0.96 ECTS. 24 hours.

Works: 1.32 ECTS. 33 hours.

Study 2.2 ECTS. 55 hours.

Evaluation tests: 0,08 ECTS. 2 hours

5. Assessment system

PRACTICES Resolution of cases that will be elaborated by the students during the practical classes. Autonomous work of the student consisting of the realization, on a weekly basis, of the work proposed by the teacher.

COMPULSORY CLASS ATTENDANCE. The practical part will be passed by attending at least 50% of the classes and submitting, at least, 50% of the assignments .

FINAL GRADE OF THE CONTINUOUS EVALUATION: Written exam (60%) + practices (30%) + attendance (10%).

FINAL EVALUATION:

Students who do not pass the continuous evaluation will take a FINAL EVALUATION:

WRITTEN TEST same criteria as the continuous test together with the resolution of two practical cases and the elaboration of a paper to be handed in on the day of the final exam.

FINAL GRADE FINAL EVALUATION: Written exam (60%) + final paper (30%) + cases (10%).

GRADING SYSTEM The numerical grade will be expressed in accordance with the provisions of art. 5.2 of the Royal Decree 1125/2003 of September 5 (BOE September 18).
